This painting, a 15th century fresco painted by Ghirlandaio in the Sistine Chapel, depicts Jesus gathering together his twelve apostles; in the background left, Jesus is speaking to Peter and Andrew who are fishing on the sea; in the background right, Jesus calls the brothers James and John, who are fixing their father’s boat. Peter and Andrew appear also in the foreground, being sent as a pair to proclaim the Gospel. To the left of Jesus, the crowd of Nazareth that rejected him gaze upon him sparingly or not at all, while the crowd to his right, dressed in Renaissance Florence fashion, eagerly await his message.
