Gustave Doré was a 19th century French engraver and painter know for, in addition to his illustrations of the Bible, popular illustrations of The Divine Comedy, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Paradise Lost. The first image shows David’s troops celebrating their defeat of the rebellious prince Absalom, while the second engraving depicts David mourning the death of his son after his troops announced their deed.
